• eyeOS

Uno de los temas que solemos tratar aquí en Pymecrunch es el de las aplicaciones online. Las aplicaciones ofimáticas como GoogleDocs, Zoho o Adobe.com te permiten trabajar remotamente en documentos que están alojados en un servidor remoto, editándolos directamente y con la particularidad de que te permiten trabajar de forma colaborativa, en grupo de trabajo, ya sea desde tu ordenador habitual como desde otro cualquiera (un cibercafé, etc).

EyeOS va un paso más allá. Es un sistema operativo totalmente online. Se trata de una plataforma basada en código abierto, diseñado para poder disponer de un “ordenador online”, simplemente accediendo a él desde un explorador (cualquier ordenador con Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, … o desde cualquier terminal movil con posibilidad de acceso a internet).

Su operativa es sumamente parecida a un sistema operativo habitual. La anterior vista es la del escriptorio EyeOS, desde donde se puede acceder a todas las aplicaciones de que disponemos con esta herramienta:

• Programas ofimáticos, como un editor de textos, una hoja de cálculo, presentaciones, calendario, gestor de contactos.
• Programas de red: un cliente de e-mail, un sistema de mensajería interna, un navegador, o un lector de feeds.
• Accesorios: calculadora, editor de notas, o widgets.

Todo totalmente personalizable. Para empezar a usar EyeOS lo único que debes hacer es subir al sistema tus archivos, fotos, documentos, etc, así como configurar tu lector de feeds, tu correo, etc.

¿Pero cuales son algunas de las ventajas de EyeOS para una Pyme?

•  Es un sistema que abarata costes de licencias, puesto que es totalmente libre. Los ordenadores dejan de alojar archivos, pasan a ser puros terminales de acceso a una información que está alojada en un único sitio.
• Puedes crear un login y password para provar EyeOS desde el servidor público. Puedes testear el sistema antes de casarte con él.
• EyeOS es libre, por lo que se puede bajar e instalar en cualquier servidor. Basta con que soporte o esté configurado para PHP.  Es decir, que la Pyme que lo desee puede contratar un servidor dedicado (una cuota mensual a un proveedor especializado) o invertir en un servidor propio, y alojar su propio EyeOS, con total seguridad.
• Importante ahorro de problemas de compatibilidades entre programas, así como de obsolescencia de ordenadores, puesto que cualquier ordenador con un explorador de internet es totalmente capaz de trabajar con EyeOS
• Si un terminal se estropea, no pierdes tu información. Accedes a ella desde cualquier otro terminal, y punto.
• EyeOS permite poder trabajar desde cualquier lugar, y desde cualquier terminal con un explorador, ya sea un ordenador fijo, portátil, movil, PDA.
• EyeOS permite trabajar en tu “escritorio virtual”, estés donde estés, de viaje, o en una oficina de un cliente/proveedor. Las posibilidades que te ofrece el acceso remoto son infinitas.
• Centernares de desarrolladores en todo el mundo trabajan para disponer de nuevas aplicaciones, nuevas herramientas para trabajar. EyeOS es una plataforma abierta a todo aquel experto que quiera aportar a la comunidad. Es un Sistema Operativo vivo. Todas las aplicaciones opcionales pinchando aquí.

Hay otras iniciativas de escritorios virtuales, como vimos aquí con OADemand. Pero EyeOS te permite disponer de tu trabajo y de tu ocio online, remotamente, estés donde estés, sin problemas. Es algo que toda Pyme debería considerar.

Mathieu Terrasson (mterrasson in the forums) has started a serie of posts explaining, step by step, how to build and prepare a diskless thinclient for eyeOS.

In 4 different posts, the author explains how to prepare the environment, the pre-build time, the build time and some last considerations, being a great guide for those who would like to use just eyeOS in a network.

As the author says in the post,

I’ve worked on an OpenSource project that aims to create thinclient that should be used to access LAN or WAN eyeOS server. The thinclient will automaticaly run a firefox browser that will open a full screen page on a Eyeos url.

At May 28th a post in a personal blog appeared announcing a new application for eyeOS. Less than two monts after that, the h3o eyeOS Apps have been growing and we can enjoy now 10 eyeOS Applications from Thorsten Zoerner, the creator of h3o.

h3oWiki (to have a lightweight wiki inside your eyeOS), h3oEyeAppsInstaller (to directly install apps from eyeOS-Apps.org), h3oSSH (to connect to servers through SSH) and h3oUpload (to upload files directly from your OS Desktop with drag and drop) are some examples of the eyeOS Applications created by h3o.

We recently read that there have been more than 1.000 downloads of the h3o apps, and we would like to encourage every eyeOS sysadmin to download and install some of the apps in their systems, and to keep an eye on the h3o blog for the future ones.

Interesante la noticia de que eyeOS integrará los servicios de Zoho, la plataforma de software como servicio, que lo anuncia en su blog. La forma de hacerlo será a través de una “aplicación instalable” en eyeOS, que permitirá al usuario acceder a los documentos que tanga almacenados en Zoho desde este escritorio web.

Realmente esta es una “no noticia”, al menos desde el punto de vista de que cualquiera puede integrar servicios que, como los de Zoho, provean una API para ello. Sí me ha parecido interesante desde el punto de vista de eyeOs y su posicionamiento en la transición entre web y escritorio y las tendencias que están apareciendo, tanto en el software como servicio como en el software más servicios y su posible modelo de negocio más allá de equipos que no funcionan sin conexión a la red (Loogic).

De entrada tengo muchas dudas respecto a los mal llamados “sistemas operativos web” - en realidad emuladores de escritorios en la web - y el valor real que aportan, toda vez que mi impresión es que la metáfora del escritorio no es útil en la web y que mejores experiencias vendrán con otros tipo de interfaces. Ahora bien, si como producto puede ir mucho más allá… siempre está uno a tiempo de descubrirlo y rectificar. Precisamente mañana estaremos charlando con Pau en entrevista para el blog, uno de los creadores de eyeOS, sobre todos estos temas.

The eyeOS Team and eyeOS Community are proud to announce the immediate availability of eyeOS 1.6 Gala Sync. This new major release, which has been centered entirely to improve the user experience at eyeOS, includes new applications, significant improvements on the overall usability and new tools to develop better applications, faster.

The new eyeOS 1.6 Desktop includes major improvements such as Drag and Drop between folders and groups, new widgets that can be launched from Accessories menu and a common actions bar, with some overall improvements on its design and functionality.

The new Gala Sync version also includes new applications such as the new eyeFeeds to read RSS sources, the new Text Editor with syntax highlighting for the most common programming languages and autocomplete features, an integrated IDE (only launchable from root user) called eyeCode and some new Games and Tools such as eyeTetravex (a math game with a system highscores system) or the new Calculator.

The system part from eyeOS 1.6 has been also improved: Developers have new base libraries to make apps that communicate beween them and create virtual work groups, lots of small fixes on the eyeOS Toolkit Widgets and the new XML-RPC system , which is the base for the syncronization, and allows the creation of desktop applications which communicate with eyeOS.

Synchronization with your local computer

Probably the most important feature of this release is the ability to create desktop apps that communicate eyeOS with the local computer where the user is in every moment, and the release of eyeSync (the first app to use this technology in eyeOS).

The syncronization tool for eyeOS, called eyeSync, will be an official app but will have its own versioning. The 0.1 version of eyeSync, which allows to syncronize automatically and transparently different folders from the system will be available today for Mac OS X (Tiger/PPC and Leopard/Intel) and Linux (in deb and source/targz), and during the next week for Windows XP and Vista.

eyeSync will keep the folders you indicate always synchronized with your eyeOS account without requiring any action from you: eyeSync will detect every change you do on those folders (copying/removing some files, saving or updating some documents…) and synchronize them with your eyeOS desktop, transparently and automatically.

You can download eyeSync and the new eyeOS version from the eyeOS Downloads page.

The first time you run eyeSync you will have to configure it by putting your server’s URL ( that can be the public server one, http://www.eyeos.info or your own local or remote eyeOS Server) and your username and password. Nothing special must be installed in the server, and all the data is transfered via the port 80, so you won’t encounter problems with local proxies when using it.

Trying the new eyeOS version

As usually, if you want to use the new eyeOS 1.6 version you can do it from the Public Server, which has been already updated to eyeOS 1.6, or downloading and installing to your local server. eyeOS is Open Source Software, released under the Affero GNU Public License (AGPL) version 3.

The development of this version has been done from its first days together with the eyeOS Community. From posts on the Forums regarding the new features that eyeOS 1.6 should had, the continoued contributions and suggestions to the Development Mailing lists, and a really intensive bug reporting during all the beta period.

This has been possible thanks to the more than 1.000 registered users in the Beta server, that will be closed later today.

What’s next?

It’s a bit early to say, but we can announce that the next eyeOS version won’t start by “1″, and will introduce a new eyeOS Toolkit, but always mantaining compatibility with eyeOS Toolkit 1.

We’ll be doing the announcement of the new version Roadmap and plans very soon, after the publication of the stable versions of eyeSync for Windows, Mac and Linux.
