It is finally summer here in Seattle and I’m trying to get out of the office as early as possible today. Here are a few cool things that have recently landed in my inbox:

Don MacAskill wrote to tell me about his new product, SmugVault. This new service extends the existing image storage capabilities provided by SmugMug, allowing users to upload a wide variety of image files, as well as files of other sorts, for safekeeping. Don used Amazon’s DevPay system to implement a usage-based fee structure — $1 per month and 22 cents per GB of storage, along with fees to transfer data in and out. The entire contents of a 2 GB memory card can be stored for just 44 cents per month. SmugVault can create finished products from raw video and image data, and it can also bundle together alternate formats of an image (GIF, RAW, and so forth).

Animoto For Business adds professional features to Animoto’s existing music video creation service. This version of the service can be used by businesses of all sorts — sports teams, real estate agents, vacation resorts, and trade shows — to produce DVD-quality videos in MP4 and ISO formats. Business users have access to a library of music that has been pre-licensed for commercial use. The product is brand-new but there are already some good success stories.

There’s a new release of Cloud Studio. It now incorporates an S3 browser!

ElasticFox now includes support for Firefox 3.0, as does the S3 Firefox Organizer.

Jungle Dave wrote to tell me that he’s released version 2.0 of Jungle Disk Desktop. The new version includes a revised user interface with a setup wizard, a configuration dialog, and a backup preview dialog; renaming and encryption of files and directories; support for European S3 buckets; bandwidth limiting, and much more. There’s also a beta version of the workgroup version (details on it can be found here). This version allows multiple users to share a single Amazon S3 account without sharing account credentials, and also allows for per-user control of access to S3 buckets.

No son pocas las opiniones reflejadas en la red acerca de la cierta lentitud que presenta en ocasiones la interfaz TouchFLO 3D en el HTC Touch Diamond.

Al parecer, HTC ha tomado nota de estas cuestiones y ha incorporado una serie de parches en una nueva versión ROM que ya está incorporada en los nuevos terminales que salen a la venta en Europa.

La empresa no ha hablado de algún tipo de ajuste en concreto, o de los cambios que han hecho en la ROM del HTC Diamond, simplemente comentan que el nuevo firmware hará que los usuarios tengan una forma más rápida y sensible de interactuar.

Es de agradecer que la compañía haya escuchado y valorado las opiniones generadas al respecto y haya encontrado soluciones e implementado en el terminal con bastante rapidez.

Veamos un vídeo de un usuario que ya ha actualizado su terminal con el nuevo firmware 1.37, y según su experiencia, se puede apreciar una clara diferencia positiva en la carga de animaciones.

Por establecer una comparación, al hacer un movimiento horizontal en el panel, tanto el icono de abajo como la imagen de fondo aparecen con mayor fluidez. Anteriormente el icono aparecía primero y luego aparecía la imagen, dando una percepción de desfase.

Sinceramente considero que el sistema no está a la altura del iPhone en cuestiones de fluidez, pero se va ganando poco a poco en este aspecto, es justo reconocer que en Windows Mobile es de los más conseguidos, aunque recomiendo que conozcáis la interfaz TouchWiz del nuevo Samsung Omnia, para establecer una comparación más justa.

Recordar que TouchFLO 3D es una interfaz de usuario gráfica que funciona por encima del sistema operativo, en este caso Windows Mobile, y para HTC es clave su optimización, ya que el resto su gama funciona con esta misma interfaz.

Buenas noticias para el resto de mercados donde aún ha salido el terminal, especialmente en EE.UU. donde existe gran interés por el terminal y se espera que HTC incluya soporte a sus redes.

El Samsung Omnia es la apuesta de este fabricante por un terminal de gama alta con pantalla táctil, con el que competirá con otros como el HTC Touch Diamond, el Xperia X1 o el iPhone. Tras los datos que te ofrecimos el otro día ahora tenemos otros adicionales, junto a algunos vídeos que nos muestran su interfaz.

Una de las apuestas más curiosas y arriesgadas del Samsung Omnia es la de incorporar un ratón óptico para controlar su interfaz. Este es un método adicional, junto a la pantalla táctil, y nos permite usarlo como estamos acostumbrados a hacer en un ordenador.

En los vídeos que os dejamos al final de la entrada se puede echar un vistazo a como se utiliza este ratón óptico y, la verdad, es que no encuentro que un control de este tipo aporte ningun ventaja en un teléfono móvil, donde el interfaz debería ser lo más intutitivo y rápido de usar posible, y no parece que el uso de un ratón en una pantalla tan pequeña cumpla esas características.

Otro de los datos curiosos del Samsung Omnia es que no dispone de acelerómetro, pero a pesar de eso permite la rotación automática de la pantalla cuando lo giramos. ¿Cómo lo consigue? Pues mediante el uso de la cámara.

A través de la cámara trasera, que tiene una resolución de 5 megapíxeles, es capaz de detectar cuando giramos el teléfono y rotar la pantalla a la posición correspondiente, función que se ha implementado en una gran mayoría de las aplicaciones del teléfono.

Así, podremos rotar la pantalla en el navegador Opera que viene preinstalado, para conseguir una mayor anchura horizontal, pero también en el reproductor de vídeos o cuando estemos usando el teclado en pantalla para obtener un completo teclado QWERTY mucho más cómodo de usar.

Otros datos que ya conocíamos pero que creo que hacen destacar al Samsung Omnia sobre otros teléfonos similares son sus capacidades de 8 o 16 GB que, al contrario que en el iPhone, se pueden aumentar aún más gracias al uso de tarjetas de memoria microSDHC, algo que agradeceremos aquellos a los que esas capacidades se nos quedan algo cortas.

El teléfono funciona con el sistema operativo Windows Mobile 6.1, sobre el cual Samsung ha implementado el interfaz Touchwiz en un intento de hacerlo más sencillo de utilizar. Con él, ofrecen una pantalla de inicio personalizable, en la que podremos añadir widgets simplemente arrastrándolos desde la barra lateral.

También tenemos un menú con accesos directos a las aplicaciones, similar al menú principal del iPhone, usando iconos de gran tamaño a los que se puede acceder pulsando directamente con el dedo sobre ellos.

¿Conseguirá competir el Samsung Omnia con el resto de teléfonos de gama alta? Serán los usuarios los que tengan que decidirlo, aunque el precio final que tenga también determinará bastante su popularidad. Por prestaciones no está mal posicionado pero habrá que ver la aceptación que tiene ese ratón óptico y el funcionamiento de la rotación automática.

I’m going to go out on a limb today and try to paint a picture of where some of this cool and crazy cloud-based infrastructure may be going. While none of what I will write about is idle speculation, it is based on just a few data points, and may be totally off base. However, I do get to talk to plenty of entrepreneurs and developers on a daily basis, and I am starting to see a very interesting pattern emerge.

The existing state of the art in cloud-based architectures takes the shape of an application running in the cloud, calling upon services running within and provided by the operator of the cloud. There are any number of great examples of this type of architecture. Doug Kaye at IT Conversations built and documented his implementation over a year ago. Earlier today, Don MacAskill of SmugMug send me a link to his new post, SkyNet Lives (aka EC2 @ SmugMug). In that article, Don provides a detailed review of SmugMug’s use of Amazon EC2 and S3 to implement a dynamic, highly scalable system which simultaneously minimizes response time and cost by optimizing the number of EC2 instances.

As I said, I am starting to see something which goes beyond this in a subtle yet important way. Developers are now building services in the cloud for other developers, with the understanding that important (and perhaps primary) consumers of the service will also be resident within the same cloud.

I’m going to call this the CSA, or Cloud Service Architecture.

Applications communicating with each other inside of the Amazon cloud enjoy some important benefits. They get high-bandwidth, low-latency communication, at little or no cost. They inherit all of the other attributes of cloud-based applications such as on-demand scalability, fault tolerance, cloud-wide network security, and cost efficiency. Applications running in loosely coupled fashion within the cloud can share data using SQS, S3, or other communication protocols of their choosing.

Right now, I see that forward-looking companies are starting to build components which fit into the CSA. On the database side, we have Vertica for the Cloud and MySQL Enterprise for EC2. On the media side, there’s Cruxy’s MuxCloud, IntrIdea’s MediaPlug, and Wowza Media Server Pro for Amazon EC2. I’m sure that there are others that I don’t know about.

So who’s calling these services from other EC2 instances within the cloud? Here are my first two data points (that’s enough to draw a trend line, right?):

1. I had breakfast with the CEO of Sonian yesterday. He told me that they are now using the Vertica product to help them store, index, and retrieve massive amounts of data (more info can be found in their case study).
2. Earlier this year I paid a visit to VisualCV in Reston, Virginia. They use MediaPlug to support uploading and processing of a variety of types of images and videos.

My sense is that this is the start of something big. Web services made it possible to cross organizational boundaries with a simple HTTP request. Now, running within the cloud makes it possible to do this with minimal network latency.

As individual developers learn more about cloud computing, they will naturally look for some very high-level components up and running within the cloud. Over time I am sure that there will be a need for more sophisticated tracking and billing mechanisms, key management, a catalog of services, and other facilities that we can’t even envision just yet. 1) abandona por fin el caduco modelo de web corporativa y se reconvierte claramente en una web periodística;
2) franquea el acceso a la mediateca, destinada a albergar un millón de horas de televisión con vídeos gratuitos bajo demanda.

Más que un simple rediseño, todo un salto cualitativo, que pretende situar al ente público audiovisual español en la “tercera era de la televisión“.
